A Leave of Absence is an approved break from study during which you are not enrolled in any subjects. It allows you to take time away from your studies without permanently withdrawing from your course.
When to apply
Applications should be submitted:
- Before the Teaching Start Date of the trimester for international students, or
- Before the census date for domestic students.
Make sure to check the Important Dates page on the Ikon website before submitting your request.
Domestic students
- You can apply for a Leave of Absence for any personal or academic reason (e.g., work commitments, travel, or personal circumstances).
- Applications submitted on and after the census date will not cancel tuition fees or FEE-HELP debt for that trimester.
- Compassionate or compelling evidence is only required if you are applying after the census date and wish to request fee remission or refund, as outlined in the Fees and Refunds Policy.
- A Leave of Absence is normally approved for one trimester at a time. Extensions may be granted where compassionate or compelling circumstances continue to apply.
International students
- A Leave of Absence can only be approved if supported by evidence of compassionate or compelling circumstances, regardless of when the request is submitted.
- Requests made on and after Teaching Start Date will not remove financial liability for that trimester.
- If approved, Ikon will report the leave to the Department of Education via PRISMS.
- You should also seek advice from the Department of Home Affairs or your Education Agent to understand how a Leave of Absence may affect your student visa.
How to apply
- Complete the online Course/Subject Withdrawal & Leave of Absence Form, outlining your reasons for requesting leave.
- Attach any relevant supporting evidence (if applicable) to your application.
- You will receive a written outcome within 2–3 business days of submission.
