Compassionate, compelling, and extenuating circumstances refer to unforeseen, short-term events beyond the student's control that significantly impact their studies or well-being. Examples include, but are not limited to:

  • Serious medical conditions, illness, injury, or accidents
  • Severe illness or injury of an immediate family or household member
  • Bereavement of a partner, close family member, or household member
  • Unexpected carer responsibilities
  • Unavoidable changes to routine employment commitments
  • Crisis or trauma, such as involvement in an accident or crime, or witnessing such events
  • Major political unrest or natural disasters necessitating immediate travel
  • Military service or jury duty
  • Severe disruption to domestic arrangements or homelessness
  • Unexpected personal hardships, including significant disruptions to domestic arrangements, employment, or finances
  • Participation in high-level sporting events sanctioned by an official sporting body

Compassionate, compelling, and extenuating circumstances will not be considered if it is reasonable to expect that the situation could have been prevented, avoided, or mitigated through the student’s reasonable diligence or effort. Examples of such circumstances include:

  • Routine work commitments
  • Public transport delays
  • Regular family commitments
  • Minor ailments or illnesses
  • Conflicts with regular recreational activities
  • Travel plans and holidays
  • Balancing workloads from other subjects or multiple assessments due concurrently
  • Lack of familiarity with academic requirements or due dates
  • Information and communications technology issues
