A grievance is a formal complaint made by someone who feels they’ve been treated unfairly or had their rights violated.
If a student feels comfortable, Ikon encourages them to first try resolving the issue directly with the person involved. This can include talking to them, writing to them, asking a staff member to help, or using feedback tools like student surveys.
When trying informal resolution, the student should:
- Describe the event or behaviour that caused concern
- Suggest a way to resolve the issue
- Propose a fair outcome
If a student is uncomfortable approaching the person directly, or if the issue is serious (such as misconduct or unlawful behaviour), or if informal resolution doesn’t work, they can file a formal grievance.
