What Happens if I’m Not Meeting Academic Progress Requirements?

Student Experience Team Student Experience Team

Students who do not meet Ikon’s academic progress requirements will receive written notification and be offered academic and wellbeing support before any formal action occurs. Ikon provides intervention strategies and student support services to assist academic improvement. Students have the right to appeal decisions within 20 business days before any enrolment cancellation is finalised.

Understanding academic progress requirements

Academic progress standards are in place to support students in successfully completing their course.

A student may be identified as not meeting academic progress requirements where they:

  • fail more than half of their subjects across two consecutive study periods, or
  • fail the same subject three times.

Ikon monitors student performance and contacts students when results indicate ongoing academic difficulty. Written notification explains the concern, outlines available supports, and describes possible next steps.

Students are provided an opportunity to respond and access assistance before any formal action is considered. A 20-business-day appeal period applies before enrolment cancellation can proceed.

What happens next

  • Written notification
You will receive written advice confirming that your academic progress requires attention. The notification outlines support options, expectations, and available pathways forward.
  • Support and Academic Improvement Plan
You may be invited to meet with the Student Experience Team and/or academic staff to develop an Academic Improvement Plan, consistent with institutional support and intervention processes. This may include:
    • academic skills support
    • timetable or study load adjustments
    • academic guidance
    • wellbeing referrals
  • Continued unsatisfactory progress
Where academic performance does not improve over subsequent study periods, Ikon may issue an official notice of intention to report or cancel enrolment.

You will have 20 business days to submit an appeal under the Grievance & Appeals Policy.
  • International students
Where the appeal period expires, or an appeal is unsuccessful, Ikon is required under ESOS legislative requirements to report the outcome to the Department of Home Affairs via PRISMS.

Important notes

  • Contact the Student Experience Team promptly after receiving an academic progress notification.
  • You may continue studying while an appeal is under review.
  • Ikon will confirm all decisions in writing and continue to provide support throughout the process.
