What is a Reasonable Adjustment?

Caroline Lee Caroline Lee
Ikon is committed to ensuring that students with additional needs are reasonably accommodated within their learning environment to promote equal opportunity and access to education.

To support this commitment, reasonable adjustments are made to eliminate barriers to learning and allow students to effectively demonstrate their knowledge and skills. These adjustments may include:

  • Adaptive/Assistive technology: Provision or loan of specialised technology or equipment to support students with disabilities or illnesses, enabling them to engage in study and assessments fairly (e.g., specialised seating).
  • Alternative assessment methods: Offering different forms of assessment, such as verbal assessments, to accommodate diverse needs.
  • Individual assessment conditions: Modifications to assessment settings, including special seating arrangements, additional time (e.g., 10 minutes per hour), or allowances for toilet, rest, exercise breaks, and bite-sized food/drink.
  • Accessible learning formats: Providing materials in accessible formats, such as large print or coloured exam papers, to meet specific needs.
  • Provision of a scribe: Arranging for a scribe to assist with written tasks as necessary.
  • Referral to additional services: Connecting students with supplementary services that can further support their educational experience.

These adjustments are designed to ensure that all students have the opportunity to succeed and fully participate in their studies.

Reasonable adjustments are intended for ongoing support throughout a course of study. If you experience a single, unforeseen, significant disruption to your studies, please refer to the Application for a Special Consideration Process.

Please also refer to Reasonable Adjustment Policy, How do I apply for Reasonable Adjustment?, How long will it take to receive the outcome of my Reasonable Adjustment application? for more details.
