Student Experience Team Student Experience Team

Academic misconduct occurs when a student acts dishonestly or unfairly in assessment or learning activities. Examples include plagiarism, cheating, collusion, falsifying information, or unauthorised use of AI or digital tools. Misconduct may be classified as minor or major depending on the intent and impact. Ikon treats all breaches seriously and investigates each report fairly.

Common types of misconduct

  • Plagiarism: using someone else’s work or ideas without proper acknowledgment.
  • Collusion: collaborating with others on an individual task.
  • Cheating: using unauthorised material or assistance during an assessment.
  • Fabrication: falsifying data, results, or references.
  • AI or contract cheating: submitting work generated or purchased from another source.

How to avoid misconduct

  • Plan your assessments early to manage workload.
  • Ask your lecturer for clarification if you’re unsure what’s allowed.
  • Review referencing guides and academic writing support resources.
