What Happens if I Breach Academic Integrity?

Student Experience Team Student Experience Team

If academic misconduct is suspected, Ikon follows a fair, confidential investigation process. You will be notified of the allegation, given the evidence, and invited to respond or attend a meeting with a support person. Decisions are based on severity, intent and available evidence. Penalties range from educational support to reduced marks, failing the assessment or subject, suspension, or expulsion. Students also have the right to appeal.

How Academic Integrity Breaches Are Investigated

1. Preliminary Review
An Academic Integrity Officer reviews the evidence and determines whether a formal allegation is required.

2. Formal Notification
You receive a written allegation outlining the issue, the evidence, and your right to respond.

3. Your Response
You may reply in writing or attend a meeting with a support person (not a lawyer).

4. Decision and Outcome
Outcomes depend on the seriousness and intention behind the breach. Possible penalties include:

  • Educational guidance
  • Reduced marks
  • Zero for the assessment
  • Fail grade for the subject
  • Suspension or expulsion for serious or repeated breaches

5. Your Right to Appeal
You may appeal the decision under the Grievance and Appeals Policy.
