A Unique Student Identifier (USI) is a free, government-issued 10-digit number required for all students studying in Australia. Your USI stays with you for life and records all nationally recognised training you complete, even across different institutions.
You must provide a valid USI to receive your qualification. If you do not supply your USI, we cannot issue your award.
What is a USI?
Your USI is your personal identification number for education in Australia. It allows you to:
- Access a record of all your completed training
- Study with multiple institutions using one identifier
- Receive your qualification upon completion
Every student studying in Australia is required to have a USI.
Step 1: Check if you already have a USI
If you have studied previously or are unsure whether you already have a USI, you can search for it online at usi.gov.au under Find your existing USI.
Step 2: Create your USI (if you don’t have one)
You must be physically in Australia (onshore) to create your USI.
What you need
-
Valid identification, such as:
- Australian driver licence, Medicare card, or passport, or
- A non-Australian passport with a valid Australian visa
- Your name recorded exactly as shown on your identification and student records

Step 3: Provide your USI to us
- Log in to your Student Portal
- Access the Learner App
- Once logged in, you will be prompted to enter your 10-digit USI
While updating your profile, please also ensure your current address and Next of Kin contact details are up to date in My Details.
Important reminder
- A valid USI is mandatory
- Without a USI, your qualification cannot be issued
- Ensure your details are accurate and submitted as early as possible
If you experience any issues creating or updating your USI, please contact the Student Experience team by submitting a Request or use the Help widget.
